Fortunately, there is now enough accessible material about language in general and linguistics in particular for the general readers as to remove any excuse for ignorance. This topic was my favourite in the book. Taking a break from The Language Instinct and quickly re-reading Monstrous Regiment for something light. Outside of the lab, though, he was fascinated by a far less tractable question: How does the human brain learn language? It can be a little intimidating to read a book on a topic that you really don't know anything about. AMY COX takes a balanced approach to the 'language instinct' debate. The only question is which came first: Were our brains customized for language or did language adapt to our brains? It explores how the newborns develop language skills and it was an amazing read. One is Frederick Bodmer's The Loom of Language originally published in 1944, during World War II, and in print ever since.
